NJCU School of Business Launches Stock Index for Top 50 NJ Companies

Jersey City, N.J., December 15, 2017 – New Jersey City University’s School of Business has launched the NJCU New Jersey 50 Index an index of publicly traded equity securities designed to be a barometer of the New Jersey economy. Developed by the NJCU School of Business and calculated by S&P Dow Jones Indices, the NJCU New Jersey 50 Index is a first for New Jersey and the larger tri-state area that is the country’s financial hub, and puts the New Jersey City University School of Business at the forefront of the exchange trade product industry.

While the S&P 500 reflects the broader domestic stock market, the NJCU New Jersey 50 Index will offer a focused perspective on the Garden State’s wide array of industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and healthcare to manufacturing, technology and transportation logistics as well as the companies behind them. Reflecting the health of the eighth largest GDP (gross domestic product) contributor in the U.S, the NJCU New Jersey 50 Index will serve as a report card for economic growth and job creation thereby making its movements of interest to investors, business leaders, economists, politicians and the general citizenry of New Jersey.

Much like the New Jersey economy, the index is a living reflection of the New Jersey economy and the companies that are powering it. From a list of more than 226 companies, the 50 companies comprising the index were selected based on the industry rank, average trading volume, revenue and profit prospects and employment in the state. The NJCU New Jersey 50 Index will be rebalanced on a quarterly basis, and the University will note any additions or deletions from organizations comprising the Index.

The NJCU New Jersey 50 Index may be used as a yard stick for the State’s overall health and speed of its economic growth as well as those of the businesses that populate it, according to Dr. Bernard McSherry, founding dean of the NJCU School of Business.

“This index is an invaluable resource that has the potential to inform investors of the tone of the State’s economy and give a clear indication of what’s happening in the areas of business growth and employment,“ Dean McSherry said.

He added, “Dissecting the index into its company holdings will reveal which industries are growing and thriving as well as those that are lagging. This information should be useful to businesses, news organizations and politicians among others inside the State.”

Dean McSherry announced that NJCU Adjunct Professor Christopher Versace, a chief investment officer of Tematica Research and journalist, will oversee the NJCU New Jersey 50 Index.

Students from the NJCU School of Business’ Student Investment Management (SIM) Group were given the unique opportunity to work on the creation of the index. Members of the SIM Group will continue to participate in the ongoing NJCU New Jersey 50 Index, working with Mr. Versace, the SIM advisor.

Receives 2017 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award

OVERLAND PARK, KS, USA (April 20, 2017) EunSu Lee, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at New Jersey City University, Jersey City, New Jersey, has been named a regional recipient of the 2017 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs recognizes individuals each year who exemplify teaching excellence in the classroom.

Dr. Lee will be honored, along with other regional recipients, at ACBSP Conference 2017, June 24-27 in Anaheim, Ca. He will receive a medallion and a $250 check. Two International Teaching Excellence Award recipients will be announced at a special Salute to Regions luncheon, one from a baccalaureate/graduate degree-granting institution and one from an associate degree-granting institution. As a regional recipient, Dr. Lee is now a candidate for the international award.

“Dr. Lee is a gifted instructor who consistently receives exceptionally positive feedback from our students,” said Dr. Wanda Rutledge, Chairperson, Management Department, Jersey City University. “His syllabi and lessons are uniformly excellent, and his class presentations regularly connect theoretical concepts to real world examples. He is extremely attentive to his students needs; I have personally witnessed the many long hours that Dr. Lee has dedicated to counseling and advising his students and looking for opportunities to introduce them to exciting research experiences. In short, he is an outstanding teacher and mentor,” she said.

The ACBSP Associate Degree Commission established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate/graduate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching, open to application by the entire membership.

Brand New Supply Chain, Logistics, & Maritime Port Management

Brand new B.S. in Supply Chain, Logistics, and Maritime Port Management will be offered in the fall of 2017. The following courses are open now to enroll. I will be teaching the first three courses: MGMT 300, MGMT 305, and MGMT 350. In addition to the courses, students may take MGMT 413 Business Information Systems as one of the core courses.

MGMT 300  Introduction to Supply Chain, Logistics and Port Management
This course is designed to provide a foundation in Supply Chain, Logistics and Maritime Port Management. Students will be introduced to the main principles and basic theories of supply chain management including procurement, production, transportation, warehousing, inventory management, logistics, port management features and information management.

MGMT 305 Procurement and Supplier Management
This course is designed to provide a foundation in Procurement and Supplier Management. Students will be exposed to key principles of purchasing and supplier strategies. Role of purchasing in today’s supply chain is re-evaluated to include traditional functions but also competencies gained from partnering with suppliers. Integration of suppliers resources at product development and operational levels will also be examined.

MGMT  350   Decision Intelligence in Supply Chains
This course is designed to equip students with data gathering and analytical skills in the field of supply chain and logistics management. Students will explore what types of data are needed for a variety of issues, what analytical tools can be used, how to use PC based spreadsheet programs and Bloomberg terminals to track trends and relations in data, how to visualize data at hand, and how to create forecast reports to make informed decisions on issues related to effective supply chain and logistics management.

MGMT 306  Logistics and Transportation Management
This course is designed to provide a foundation in Logistics and Transportation Management. Students will be expose to key components involved in the operations of supply chains and evaluate their corresponding transportation options to maximize the efficiency. The fundamental principles utilizing multiple modes of transportation to include air, maritime, and ground transportation will also be explored in this class.

MGMT 310 Port and Intermodal Transportation
This course builds on the theoretical foundation provided by the course: Operations and Management of Transportation. It provides the students an insight into the operational of Port and Intermodal Transportation.


Call for Posters and Oral Presentations

The inaugural Business Student Research Showcase is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the Harborside 2 Skyline Room. Students are requested to submit research projects, presentations from a class project and/or individual capstone projects. Members of the NJCU community, alumni, friends, and the public are invited to attend.

The showcase will celebrate the achievements of business students by highlighting the creativity of students engaged in research in their business courses, independent studies, and extra-curricular activities.

Best Presentation Award for Undergraduate Students

The competition will consist of two separate categories: a poster presentation category and an oral presentation category. The grand prize winners in both the poster presentation and oral presentations will each receive a cash award of $200.00, with 3 runners-up in each category receiving a lesser amount. Winners of the poster and presentation competition will be announced during the showcase. The presentations could be either a co-authored group presentation or a sole-authored (individual) presentation. Participants are permitted to compete in both categories, by submitting both 1 poster entry and making 1 oral presentation, if desired.

  • Best Oral Presentation: Grand Prize Winner (best presentation), and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place runners-up
  • Poster Presentation: Grand Prize Winner (best presentation), and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place runners-up

Students will benefit from this showcase by gaining experience in public communication and interacting with the invited guests, judges, and many members and friends of the NJCU community.  This will be a great networking opportunity! Additionally, participants will receive public recognition of their efforts, with the possibility that some students may wish to include successful entries as an item on their employment resume.

All abstracts (summarizing your oral presentation, poster presentation or both), should be submitted electronically at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9CZNMZV. Click the link and follow the instruction for submitting an abstract.  The author (or authors, if a co-authored work) should submit the abstract. All abstracts should be less than 500 words. All presenters should be identified through the submission. The title of the presentation should be included in the abstract. The Business Student Research committee will send you a receipt for your submission; if you don’t receive the receipt, please contact the committee at elee3@njcu.edu.

Association of Operations Management (APICS) NJCU Student Chapter

 The inaugural meeting of the Association of Operations Management (APICS) NJCU Student Chapter will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at 4:00 – 5:00 pm at Classroom #201B at the School of Business located at Harborside.

The meeting agenda is as follows:

  • 4:00 – 4:10 pm: Introduction to the APICS
  • 4:10 – 4:30 pm : Introduction to the constitution and by-law
  • 4:30 – 4:50 pm : Election for Student Board (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer)
